Mental health is a growing concern in Australia. One in four women and one in eight men will suffer from a depressive illness some time in their life. It is the 3rd largest health problem in Australia, next to heart disease and stroke.
In view of these staggering statistics, The Filipino Australian Movement for Empowerment (FAME) as a community service will focus the next Expresso Information Series on Mental Health and Depression. This enlightening and informative session will be held on Saturday, 10 March 2012 from 1pm to 3pm at P-Noy Lounge at First Avenue, Blacktown (right in front of Pacific Health Centre).
Guest Speaker is Dr. Ted Cassidy, consultant psychiatrist at The Hills Clinic. He will share his knowledge and expertise on the sensitive issue of mental health. He will also identify the signs of depression and clarify the stigma surrounding mental health .
“We need to look after our mental health just as we need to look after our physical health in order to be productive members of our community. Depression is more than just chasing the blues away. It is a serious illness and it is time that the community is made aware of this,” said Executive Director, Ferdie Francisco.
This information session is invaluable to the community and pertinent to the current times.
Fame is all about empowerment of the Filipino and the Expresso series has provided relevant information for the community in a relaxed atmosphere for the past years.
Now on its 4th year, Fame will also be chartering of the Blacktown Suburban council immediately after the information series. With its aim of reaching out to the grass roots, Fame has already established chapters in the Woodcroft, Kings Park/Marayong, and Quakers Hill areas.
