In a community where good laughs are rare, one man stands out – Eugene Benitez. He’s the community’s funny man. He’s right there, quick to find the funny side in any situation and ever ready with a comeback line. He’s smart, intelligent and his lines are all wrapped with wit and humour and dashed with subtle overtones.
Most recently, he stepped up to the task of the “pilot” and emcee for the special community tribute for Mr. Arnul Pan, retiring Country Manager of Philippine Air Lines. Being a Bicolano like the honoree, he dropped a few lines in the dialect to put the honoree at ease. He then took off with aplomb and much to the delight of the audience. And in the spirit of the theme of the night, it was a smooth flight all the way.
Already, he’s made it as a standup comic at popular Aussie spots like The Comedy Store at Fox Studios where he has regular stints on the first Friday and Saturday of every month. Likewise, he has been called upon for community and charity events. He’s an eloquent speaker and his versatility allows him to shift tempo at a moment’s notice. With precise comedic timing, he dishes out the funnies and then simmers down for the formalities of a program. As a true professional, he streamlines his jokes which he has stocks and oodles of to cater to the audience before him.
Silver tongued Benitez has a natural talent for mimicking and impersonating nationalities. With more accents than anyone dares to master, he’s quick to quip much to the amusement of all. And no race is exempt.
He was the valedictorian of Albay Central School and believe it or not, he’s an ex seminarian of St. Paul’s Seminary where character, discipline and values were instilled in him. And traces of the seminary’s influence are still evident as he takes time out to give a two-hour tutorial class to underprivileged children weekly. He currently works for Google Sales where nothing is the ordinary and he is forced to think outside the box.
According to Eugene: “Laugh whenever and wherever you can. It gets you out of the doldrums, especially when things are bad.” “ It works perfectly with the three spirits – Rum, vodka and gin” he adds with a hearty laugh.
