Sydney Celebrates Philippine National Day 2024

Once again, the Filipino community in Sydney gathered to celebrate the 126th anniversary of Philippine Independence at the Grand Pavilion, Rosehill Gardens, Rosehill. The formal gala event was organised by the Philippine Community Council of NSW (PCC-NSW) along with its affiliates.

Guests of Honour were H.E. Maria Hellen De La Vega, Philippine Ambassador to Australia, Minister Chris Bowen, Federal Member of McMahon, Minister for Climate Change and Energy representing the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.  A toast to both countries highlighting the friendship between the two nations was made by the official dignitaries.

In her speech, Ambassador De La Vega reiterated the theme, “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan (Freedom, Future, History.).

“The Philippines and Australia share deep historical bonds and warm people-to-people ties that helped mould our Strategic Partnership. The Filipino community in this country, at over 400,000 strong, is an anchor of our robust relations and an inspiration to our strong resolve to deepen and broaden bilateral cooperation,” said Ambassador De La Vega.

Other dignitaries were Philippine Consul-General Charmaine Rowena Aviquivil and the Philippine Consulate staff, Tourism Attaché,Ms. Purificacion S. Molintas, and the Hon. Steve Kamper MP, Minister for Multiculturalism.

Highlight of the evening was special guest, Filipino singer and entertainer, Raymond Lauchangco who left the audience enthralled as he sang his old time hits. He also sang a special Filipino song “Hahanapin Ko” that left the audience  nostalgic.

 

The captivating opening number featured the ‘Dinagyang’ ethnic dance originating from Iloilo City, in the province of Negros. In a dimmed setting, the dancers sparkled with fluorescent lighted butterfly wing tips and colourful costumes.  ‘La Jota de Sombrilla’ was also performed, featuring brightly coloured Maria Claras and matching umbrellas reminiscent of the Spanish era.  The traditional “Valse de Rigodon” featuring the PCC-NSW affiliates was choreographed by Rommel Reyes Olson.

PCC-NSW president Cesar Bartolome gave the welcome remarks. The event was jointly hosted by Rod Komitiyage Dingle, Fe Limjap, Jojo Sebastian and Edinel Magtibay Dearden of SBS Filipino.
